When Tom Maxfield retired from the computer software business he helped to build into a global company, he and his wife Jocelyn embarked on pursuing their dream of creating an outstanding hotel in the form of Seaham Hall and Serenity Spa in County Durham.

During his career, Tom had stayed in some of the greatest hotels in the world and dined in some of its most exclusive restaurants.  This insight, helped him in his new venture to develop an unpretentious style of hospitality, designed around the needs of the customer.

Tom owns Tom’s Companies which comprises a number of hotels and restaurants united by excellent service and exquisite surroundings – including the renowned Fisherman’s Lodge restaurant in Jesmond Dene and the newly opened urban day spa Serenity in the City in Jesmond.

Tom believes that by showcasing the very best that North East England has to offer, we can help improve understanding about the region and improve perceptions of the North East that will help to attract and retain new business and talent and in turn help to grow the region’s economy.

Seaham Hall and Serenity Spa

Seaham Hall and Serenity Spa is leading the way for luxurious hospitality and has recently been voted Best UK Spa Destination 2006 by Conde Nast Traveller, showing just how this local gem is capturing attention on a national scale.

The small luxury hotel, which is only 20 minutes from Newcastle, is a fantastic place to indulge yourself, and linked to the hotel by a magical walkway is the Serenity Spa which is oriental in style and inspired by Feng Shui, offering up to 45 different treatments.

The White Room Restaurant has recently achieved Michelin star status, which comes only a few months after the hotel received five-star rating, becoming the only hotel in North East England to hold such a title.

Seaham Hall has always been the perfect location for a wedding; Lord Byron married Annabelle Milbanke, daughter of Sir Ralph Milbanke at the Hall in 1815.
